You could already read about kinds of clutter and what costs you incur if you do not clear it. Today I will show you how to declutter your home in an effective way.
How To Declutter Your House
Read more about clutter:
Before you start reading further, take a notebook. Read the articles listed above and list all the clutter you can find in your house, garden, garage and other physical places. First we need to clear the space you spend most of your time. To make decluttering effective, you need to go through the following steps:
1. Prepare Four Boxes
You will need four boxes:
- the things to donate – unwanted items which may be useful for other people
- the things to throw away – obviously for deletion
- the things to keep
- the things to store – when you are not sure if you keep them or throw away.
Choose the boxes which are easy for disposal, like cardboard ones. Empty them as soon as possible after filling in with clutter. In case of the first two – donate or throw away. In the case you keep an item put it away at the right place and also organise some space for storing things from the last box.
2. Plan Your Work
Keep a schedule. This is a wonderfully organized way to maintain a clean house, especially for those who work best when they have “to-do” lists to follow. So take your notebook and plan your work in writing before going to the next step.
3. Check Where Exactly Clutter Is
You already have your list. However, the reality may surprise you. For example, there will be more clutter than you have expected. Go room by room and divide your things into four boxes: things to donate, things to throw away, things to keep, and things to store. If you do not need it or love a given item, consider getting rid of it. In a case of hesitation – put things to the last box. Finish one room before moving on to the next.
4. Review the “Keep It” Box
It is only the beginning. Now go through your box of things to keep and find a place for everything. For example, keep keys by the door. You need to find space for each item from the “keep it” box. If you can’t – decide to donate, throw away or store elsewhere for a while.
5. Organize What’s Left
After you have found places for what you are keeping, be sure that you are storing things in a way that makes sense and looks nice. For example, in the case of kids’ toys, store them very neatly in tubs, which provide quick cleanup and keep toy clutter out of sight. Having drawer organisers in your bathrooms and kitchen is another good idea. It can keep drawers from overflowing with extra items.
Let’s go further. Create a filing system for papers to make it easy to put them away and find them when you need them. Remember that if you put a little extra effort into organizing your things now, you will save time in cleaning up and maintaining order for years to come.
The Process of Clearing the Clutter
You can clear it in one go or by the 30-second rule. What is that? Firstly do not be confused with the dubious ‘Five-Second Rule’ (which entails eating food off the ground that’s been there only five seconds) The 30-second rule was created by Sarah Felton of Messies Anonymous. The rules are simple: if a job takes around 30 seconds or less to do, do it immediately. This applies to
Now you may ask me: How should I actually clear the clutter? I will give you one example with a drawer. The way to declutter a drawer is as follows: empty everything out, clean the drawer, sort through the pile of stuff from the drawer (discarding as much as possible) and organizing the few things left. Do that with each closet, cupboard or wardrobe and with each shelf in these pieces of furniture. Do it with each
Watch Your Hot Spots!
Do you remember those piles that you have just got rid of? Clutter tends to accumulate in the same places. Some of the worst include the front door and the kitchen table where clutter accumulates slowly, but constantly little by little each day. I recommend that you focus on the areas where you tend to leave clutter at the end of each day for they do not turn into big piles again
Put Your Things Away
Take 15 minutes. You can put on some music and while listening to it take 15 minutes, a few times a day, to clean. You can get a lot done in 15 minutes and it doesn’t impact your schedule too much to do so. I have tried this method and can recommend it to everyone. Some of my friends also confirmed its usability.
Stop Receiving Junk Mail
One simple way to cut down on paper clutter is to get rid of the junk before it comes in. We all know how hard it is to pick up a colourful leaflet and put it to the bin. I will write more about clearing the paper clutter in my next article.
Use These Simple Tips
- Do a light cleaning at the end of every day.
- Do a more thorough cleaning once a week. You can also hire someone to do it for you if it fits your budget.
